For centuries glasshouses, including orangeries and palmhouses, have allowed exotic fruits and vegetables to be grown where they would never otherwise have survived.
Today, domestic greenhouses are commonplace but glasshouses, like those here in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, now play a vital role in conserving plants from around the world for scientific research and because their existence is threatened.
